Glossary

Action – Money that is bet, usually refers to a total amount during a session of play: “$120 Put into action.”

Aggregate Winnings – Completed total of all money won from each session of play during a day of gaming.

All-in  – This means placing a bet that uses all of one’s chips in a game of poker.

Baccarat – This is a common casino game that comes in 3 primary versions: Punto Banco, Baccarat Banque & Chermin de Fer, with the first being the most popular at a global level. Relies on either eight or six decks of cards. While the two least popular require some strategy, Punto Banco is a game relying purely on chance.

Banker – This is the person who deals the cards in most games, but in certain games players take their turns at the table being the banker.

Bankroll – This is the entirety of the cash or credit available to a player that they have decided to use for wagering purposes.

Beef – A disagreement, usually taking place between a player and a dealer when a player feels they have been the victim of unfair treatment.

Betting Limits – Most table games in a casino have minimum and maximum wagering requirements that must be met in order for a player to be eligible to wager. Often these are somewhat malleable by customer’s request.

Carousel – A ring of slot machines offering a variety of different themes or styles except in larger casinos where slots tend to be grouped by type and style. In the middle an employee exchanges cash for tokens.

Croupier – Word derived from French language which means dealer, typically used for dealers in roulette or baccarat.

Deal – This is the distribution of cards to the players at a given table prior to a game’s start.

Eye in the Sky – Casinos generally have video cameras in place to monitor activities and cut losses. This is the colloquial term for those cameras that are usually located above the gaming operations.

Joker – Normally a wild card, this is the traditional 53rd card in a deck of traditional cards.

Ladderman – Casino worker who sits atop a ladder to watch over games of baccarat from a more effective point of view. Assists team of two dealers and a croupier in supervising play.

Multi-Player Casino – This is a casino online that allows players to be pitted against one another.

Natural – This is a term in blackjack that references two cards adding up to exactly 21 and is also known simply as ‘blackjack’.

Net Winnings – Money left at the end of the day after any losses are deducted.

Pot – This is a poker term referring to accumulated bets in the middle of the table from antes and raises. This will be taken by whomever holds the winning hand at the game’s end.

Straight Keno – This is the usual version of Keno that is most common in casinos and is played by picking numbers on a ticket.

Suit – Four different types of cards in the traditional playing deck: Spades, Clubs, Hearts, Diamonds.

Tapping Out – Stopping play when one’s bankroll is totally used up.
